At Papa Toa – He Puna Waiora, we recognise that our physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing are deeply interconnected. When we experience stress, trauma, grief, exhaustion or the demands of everyday life, these experiences can affect our tinana, hinengaro and wairua.
Our healing sessions provide a culturally safe, nurturing and mana-enhancing space where you can reconnect with yourself, release tension and receive the care and aroha your body and wairua deserve.
Every session is guided by tikanga Māori, karakia and the traditional healing knowledge passed down through generations.
WHAT TO EXPECT
60-Minute Healing Experience
Your session combines whakawhanaungatanga, traditional mirimiri, honohono and a specialised Rongoā Māori facial.
15 Minutes – Whakawhanaungatanga & Hauora Kōrero
We begin with whakawhanaungatanga, karakia and whakawhitiwhiti kōrero, taking time to understand your individual hauora needs.
During this kōrero, we explore your overall wellbeing, including:
Taha Tinana – Physical Wellbeing
Identifying areas of physical discomfort, muscular tension, fatigue and the physical effects of stress on your body.
Taha Hinengaro – Mental & Emotional Wellbeing
Exploring emotional wellbeing, including stress, grief, emotional exhaustion and any challenges you may be navigating.
Taha Wairua – Spiritual Wellbeing
Acknowledging your spiritual wellbeing, connection to self, mauri and any feelings of disconnection or imbalance.
This kōrero allows us to identify areas that may benefit from additional care and tailor your healing experience to your individual needs.
35 Minutes – Traditional Mirimiri & Honohono
Your healing continues with traditional Māori mirimiri, performed on a comfortable massage table.
Mirimiri is a traditional Māori healing practice involving therapeutic touch, massage techniques and an understanding of the interconnectedness of tinana, hinengaro and wairua.
Your mirimiri may focus on areas such as the back, shoulders, neck, arms, hands and other areas requiring attention.
Mirimiri may support:
- Releasing muscular tension and physical discomfort
- Encouraging deep relaxation
- Supporting circulation and physical wellbeing
- Easing feelings of stress and emotional tension
- Encouraging reconnection with your tinana
- Supporting a sense of calm and balance
Honohono – Energetic Healing
Honohono is woven throughout your healing experience and guided by karakia.
This traditional Māori energetic healing practice focuses on restoring balance and harmony within the mauri and wairua.
Through gentle, intentional healing techniques, honohono provides space for emotional release, spiritual connection, grounding and restoration.
Our approach recognises that healing extends beyond the physical body and acknowledges the importance of caring for the whole person.
10 Minutes – Specialised Rongoā Māori Facial
Your healing experience includes a beautiful, specialised Rongoā Māori facial using our handcrafted, plant-based skincare preparations.
Drawing upon the nourishing properties of native rākau and traditional Māori plant knowledge, this gentle facial provides an opportunity to care for your skin while encouraging relaxation and restoration.
Depending on your individual skin needs, your facial may include:
- Gentle cleansing and exfoliation
- Nourishing Rongoā Māori skincare preparations
- Facial mirimiri to encourage relaxation and ease facial tension
- Application of our handcrafted Pani Atua balm, containing beautiful botanical ingredients including mamaku, harakeke and other skin-nourishing plants
Our Rongoā facial is designed to leave your skin feeling nourished, refreshed and cared for.
GUIDED BY KARAKIA
Karakia is an integral part of our healing practice.
Each session is opened and closed with karakia, acknowledging the spiritual dimensions of healing, the mātauranga of our tūpuna and the importance of creating a safe and respectful healing environment.
Throughout your session, karakia may also guide the mirimiri and honohono, supporting the intentions established during your initial hauora kōrero.

We particularly welcome those who spend so much of their lives caring for others, our māmā, kuia, aunties, wāhine, tāne and the many pou of our whānau who deserve time and space to be nurtured themselves.
You do not need to be Māori to access our services. We warmly welcome people from all walks of life who wish to experience traditional Māori healing practices.
LOCATION & AVAILABILITY
All mirimiri and honohono sessions are performed on a comfortable massage table within a private, welcoming and culturally safe healing space.
Appointments are available at the Strandon Professional Centre, New Plymouth, where we share clinical facilities with Waimanako / Taranaki Retreat, subject to room availability.
All treatments are provided in person and by appointment only.
